Neallie Saxon Jr. III, 1 year old, was struck by an SUV in Deerfield Beach Florida.
Deerfield Beach, Florida – Neallie Saxon Jr. III, only 1 year old, was struck by an SUV in Deerfield Beach Sunday. His grandmother, Caroline Chery said Monday that the toddler died at Broward Health Medical Center.
Chery said that her grandson wandered into the street while her family prepared to celebrate another family members birthday party.
Broward Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Gina Carter said witnesses told detectives that the children “often played outside without adult supervision, as they were on this occasion.”
Witnesses said that the SUV did not stop. Some family members started preforming CPR on the child, while other family members chased the driver down to the end of the street.
The driver, Mirlande Mardice, was also taken to the hospital for her injuries.
“They beat her unmercifully”, said one witness at the scene.
Carter stated that the boy was shorter than the vehicles bumper making it very likely the driver did not see the toddler, and he was not visible from the drivers perspective.
Detectives are still investigating the incident, including the beating of the driver.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the young boy.
