In a tragic incident, two deceased individuals were found in the landing gear compartment of a JetBlue aircraft during a routine post-flight inspection at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on January 6, 2025.
The Airbus A320, operating as Flight 1801, had departed from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and landed in Fort Lauderdale around 11:10 p.m. The grim discovery was made by maintenance workers shortly after arrival. The identities of the individuals remain unknown, and authorities are investigating how they accessed the aircraft.
JetBlue expressed sorrow over the incident, stating, “This is a heartbreaking situation, and we are committed to working closely with authorities to support their efforts to understand how this occurred.”
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Autopsies are planned to determine the cause of death.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about airport security and the extreme risks associated with stowaway attempts. According to the FAA, individuals hiding in aircraft wheel wells face life-threatening conditions, including hypothermia, hypoxia, and the potential for being crushed by landing gear mechanisms.
Operations at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport were not disrupted, and flights continued as scheduled. Authorities are working diligently to uncover the circumstances that led to this tragic event.
